Orangutans, found on two islands (Borneo and Sumatra) in Southeast Asia, are one of the four living great apes and one of our closest relatives. The largest arboreal animal in the world, these majestic and intelligent creatures are so much like us, that their name, “orang hutan” means “person of the forest” in the local Malay language.
But these magnificent red apes are in danger. The forests that they call home are rapidly being destroyed by large companies to plant palm oil plantations. Palm oil is an ingredient used in many of the products you can find in your local grocery store. While palm oil itself isn’t bad, when grown irresponsibly and unsustainably, it is a major threat to wildlife. In Southeast Asia, palm oil plantations are leaving orangutans with not enough room to live. They are in danger of going extinct in your lifetime if something is not done soon!
While it may seem that there is nothing you can do as a kid far around the globe from the orangutans’ home, THERE IS! Explore the links below to find out how YOU can make a difference and help save these amazing animals.
