Orangutans at Accredited Zoos
There are 216 orangutans currently housed in institutions accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (92 males and 124 females), in 55 institutions across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. All of these individuals are managed by the AZA Orangutan Species Survival Plan®. One of the SSP’s most important roles is to ensure that the managed orangutan populations at accredited zoos remain healthy, genetically-diverse, and self-sustaining. To learn more about everything the AZA Orangutan SSP does, check out the AZA Orangutan SSP page. To see where orangutans can be found in accredited North American zoos, check out the table below. To get more information about an individual zoo, visit its website by clicking the zoo’s name. A select few have provided detailed information about their orangutan programs, and clicking the ”Meet their Orangutans” link on the far right will present that zoos orangutan’s stories, pictures, and content about conservation and education efforts.
